Bengaluru, Apr 23 (KNN)   The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) has set up its sixth centre in Bengaluru to ensure growth and development of packaging.

“Packaging today contributes 5.3 per cent of GDP and this industry vertical is growing at 15 per cent, the second fastest in world. We expect it to double to 30 per cent within a decade. Our research in secondary and tertiary packaging is even recognised by European Union, and we reached the milestone much ahead of time, thanks to the work happening at professional institutes like IIP, IIT and NID,” said a media report quoting Union Minister of Commerce, Anand Sharma.

Director IIP Hyderabad AVPS Chakravarthi endorsed the importance of courses in packaging.  “There is lack of basic awareness about packaging in the user industry, especially in the SME sector. The new centre will enhance IIP’s capability to spread the awareness and improve the quality of packaging in India,” he said at a recent event.
An autonomous body, IIP is located in Nelamangala, Sompura Industrial Area of Bengaluru, which is a large industrial belt.

It will commence training during this academic year and will include courses such as - 2-year post- graduate diploma course in packaging, 18 months of distance education in packaging, 3 months of IRC (intensive training course) in packaging, besides, short-term residential courses, and Union government facilitated exchange programmes with Africa and Sri Lanka.

Currently, IIP has centres in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

IIP’s focus lies in increasing awareness about the importance of packaging in India, especially amongst small and medium enterprises and expanding the export market, by way of initiatives in fields like innovative package design and development, standardisation and cost reduction.

In the initial years, the Bengaluru Institute will cater to industry requirements such as testing and consultancy and host knowledge exchange programmes and seminars. It will also offer vocational courses in packaging technology for graduates and working professionals.

Significantly, IIP is closely associated with international bodies like the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), Asian Packaging Federation (APF), and International Trade Centre (ITC), Geneva, and has been working for the overall growth and development of packaging globally.  (KNN)
