International Forum on Intellectual Property begins on Jan-14

New Delhi, Jan 10 (KNN)  In order to help entrepreneurs, particularly from the MSME sector, protect their intellectual property (IP) and benefit from their creativity without their ideas being exploited by others and thereby enhance their business competitiveness and growth in the global markets, an International Forum on intellectual property will be held here next week.
 
Organised by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) in cooperation with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and with the support of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP); the International Forum on ‘Leveraging Intellectual Property for Enterprise Growth and Competitiveness’ will be held here on January-14 and 15.
 
The objective of the forum is to bring forth the modes of leveraging and strategic advantages of Intellectual Property in enhancing the business competitiveness and growth in the global markets, according to an official release.
 
The forum will endeavour to showcase and exemplify the importance that IP has to play in making big businesses big and to enhance economic and strategic competences globally.  
 
Key highlights of the forum are the Keynote Address by Director General, WIPO, Francis Gurry, and Chief Guest Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India, Nirmala Sitharaman.

Other speakers include Secretary General, FICCI, A Didar Singh; Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, Chaitanya Prasad; and Assistant Director General and Chief of Staff (WIPO), Naresh Prasad.

The four main themes of the forum are - Conversations on innovation and IP for business growth and competitiveness; IP strategies for protecting technology innovations in businesses; IP strategies for protecting brands and designs in businesses; and IP strategies for creative industries.

Over the past decade, the issues of IPR have gained special importance for the MSME sector as IPR protection plays a key role in gaining competitive advantage in terms of technological gains for achieving higher economic growth in a market driven economy.
 
However, IPR requires greater understanding and attention by the industry, particularly the MSME sector in India. The National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) visualises a National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme (NMCP) to enhance the competitiveness of the SMEs sector. One of the components of the NMCP is building awareness on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for the MSME. Further, to enable the MSME sector face the present challenges of liberalization, various activities on IPR are proposed under this scheme.
 
The Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) houses an Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC) that is well equipped to offer quality services in all areas of Intellectual Property Rights and comprises of technical and legal experts having extensive knowledge in the field of intellectual property rights. The centre also has a panel of legal and technical experts which are established brand names among their respective areas to provide assistance in this venture. 

The centre, in addition to providing general advisory about IPRs, such as, patents, trademarks, designs and copyrights will also provide services related to patent searches, patent drafting, patent  prosecution, facilitation in commercialization of Inventions, trademark prosecution matters, etc.  (KNN/ES)
