“The forum would also articulate and facilitate the implementation of decisions emanating from Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)/ Inter Governmental Groups (IGG) on Tea Meetings,” said Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, D Purandeswari, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
“The Forum would promote collaboration and networking between producers particularly in respect to research and technology development, generic promotion of tea etc,” she added.
Among the objectives of ITPF are to promote the interests of tea producing countries; discuss and evolve solutions on common problems affecting producers and provide technical cooperation and sharing of both technology and expertise.
The forum would also look into ways to stimulate demand for tea through promotional campaigns, awareness programmes and positioning tea as a preferred beverage the world over. It would undertake market studies and survey and research projects. Should any of their members require training in marketing of tea, the forum would arrange the same.
Tea producing countries - India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Malawi, Indonesia, Rwanda, Iran and China met in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 21st and 22nd January 2013. During the meeting, the draft Constitution of the Forum was discussed and signed by all participating members.
At the end of the meeting a joint communiqué was issued to uphold the objectives of the forum.
The Government of India has initiated the process to ratify the draft constitution of ITPF. (KNN)
