New Delhi, Oct 15 (KNN)  The Indian Internet Pharmacy Association (IIPA) which plans to cater to the public’s demand for safe and easily accessible medicine at affordable price has been officially launched.

IIPA which has a mission to promote and protect public health, has brought together some of the prominent players both the pharma industry and the e-commerce industry.

IIPA has 11 leading ePharmacies as its members, which include Bookmeds, mChemist, Medidart, Medlife, Medstar, Netmeds, Pharmeasy, PM Healthcare (Zigy.com), SaveOnMedicals, Savemymeds and 1mg.com, according to a press release.

Needless to say, there is growing penetration and awareness of internet pharmacies.  The association has assured that it would adhere to the rules and regulations governing pharmacies and the dispensing of prescription medications.

Speaking at the launch, president of IIPA, Prashant Tandon said, “The association would ensure that partners operate in the interests of the public, and would therefore, be extremely selective in its screening process and would only allow, “the best of the best” to earn the association’s imprimatur of approval.

“The main goal of this organization is to ensure ePharmacies operate in harmony with the requirements of the consumers and the regulator, keep fly-by-night operators out of the business and to bring the “best of the West”, where online pharmacies are fairly mature, to India,” he added.

Significantly, to be a member of the association requires a great deal more than an application and a desire to sell medicine online, he said.

On the other hand, General Secretary, Kiran Divakaran applauded the regulators’ initiative to draft guidelines to regulate the new model. “This organization has submitted recommendations that we believe, if adopted will help transformation of the Industry by leveraging technology in a smart way, create lakhs of new jobs for pharmacists, technical operatives and all within the scope of bringing medicine easily and affordably within the reach of people all over India. It’s an idea whose time has come,” he said.

“E-Health is one of the initiatives within the Digital India theme, said IIPA’s treasurer, Nishi Gandotra, “With the government spending more than 500 crores to increase computer literacy and several thousand crores to digitally connect entire country with the objective of fulfilling that vision, E-Pharmacies will go a long way in making that vision a reality.”
“Our association members possess the will, the ability and the passion to deliver on that commitment.” she added.

The organization also promises to ensure that its members operate in accordance with the existing Drugs and Cosmetics Rules read with Section 4 and 5 of Information Technology Act, 2008, and Pharmacy Practice Regulations, 2015 issued by Government of India through PCI.  (KNN Bureau)
