IOM, FICCI join hands to reduce international exploitative recruitment

A memorandum of understanding was exchanged between the two organisations yesterday during a meet in Geneva.
A major area of concern is unscrupulous and unethical recruitment intermediaries who prey on poorly informed migrants and charge extortionate fees in order to secure jobs overseas.
“A commitment towards ethical recruitment would mitigate both employer detriment and improve worker welfare. Most of the unethical practices that take place are because of unscrupulous third party mediation resulting in increased costs of migration and vulnerability of the migrant and lowering overall productivity” said, FICCI Secretary General A Didar during the meeting.
IOM and FICCI are committed to working together with governments, employers, like-minded intermediaries and civil society to develop practical solutions to the global problem of unfair and unethical recruitment.
“The partnership between IOM and FICCI is an important step toward making labour migration safer and more efficient. Eliminating abusive practices and excessive costs is necessary for well-functioning international labour mobility and for the protection of migrant workers.” said the IOM Director-General William Lacy Swing.
IOM is the leading international organization concerned with migration committed to improved migration governance through safe, efficient and orderly migration.
FICCI is the voice of India’s business and industry and has established partnerships with over 200 industry associations and the government. (KNN/ST)
