Jewellery Excise - Sub-committee under Dr. Ashok Lahiri to interact with trade and industry

New Delhi, Apr 23 (KNN) The Central Government has set-up a Sub Committee under Dr Ashok Lahiri, to interact with the trade and industry on the imposition of Central Excise Duty on jewellery.

The Committee would comprise of - Gautam Ray; Rohan Shah, Legal Expert; Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce; Alok Shukla, Joint Secretary, Tax Research Unit, CBEC; and Representatives from the trade will be appointed to the sub-committee shortly.

The Committee would consider all issues related to compliance procedure for excise duty, records to be maintained, operating procedures and all other relevant issues, said Minister of Finance in a release.

All Associations / trade and industry will be given an opportunity to submit their representations before the sub-committee in writing. All India Associations will also be given an opportunity to state their case in person.

It may be recalled that the jewellery traders including the micro and small entrepreneurs from across the country were on 6 week strike following the announcement of levy of 1 per cent excise of jewellery.
