Jute production last fiscal was 108 lakh bales

New Delhi, Oct 30 (KNN) India has produced close to 108 lakh bales of jute during the last fiscal, touching 2353 quintals per hectare. However, jute cultivation area has remained constant over the last few years at about 9 lakh hectares.
“India is leading jute goods producing country in the world, accounting for about 70 per cent of estimated world production,” said an official notification of the indigenous fibre which has occupied an important and integral part of the national economy in India.
Products made of the natural fibre include jute bags and diversified jute products which are in great demand around the world. It is also used for making burlap, sacking and carpet backing cloth.
India is the major producer of jute products in the world, primarily because of its vast domestic market. In fact the average consumption out of total production has been around 90 per cent.
To increase jute production and overall development of jute industry both at home and abroad, the government in 2007-08 launched the “Jute Technology Mission” (JTM) spanning a period of five years.
JTM provides for setting up of Jute Parks for the diversified sector. Currently about 73 jute mills are operating in the country.
As far as exports are concerned, there has been a considerable increase in export of jute products. During 2012-13, export of jute goods reached 214 metric tonnes, which has been valued at Rs 1598.04 crore.
However, import of raw jute has declined during the last two years as in 2011-12, as much as 183,209 metric tonnes of jute was imported, while in 2012-13 it was 160,096 metric tonnes. (KNN/ES)
