Karnataka, Gujarat bag top place in DPIIT startup ranking

New Delhi, July 5 (KNN) According to the latest ranking released by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on Monday, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Meghalaya have emerged as best performers among Indian states in the startup ranking 2021.

The DPIIT rankings aims to recognise the efforts of the states and union territories to develop the startup ecosystem in the state. Its objective is to foster completion among the states for enhanced growth.

The rankings categorize the states into two groups based on their size. While Karnataka and Gujarat fall in the A category, Meghalaya is under the category B.

Other States such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Telangana in the A category and J&K in the B category, have bagged the title of top performers. Meanwhile, eight states, including Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, and three B category states have been named leaders.

Speaking at the event to honour the state representatives, Piyush Goyal, Commerce & industry minister said “the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the government’s initiative to create a freely accessible online system for traders and consumers, will spawn a lot of startups. ONDC is being touted as a nationwide player that can break the monopoly prevailing in the e-commerce sector.”

“The Unified Payment Interface (UPI), which democratised the payment system in India, has been a huge success. In the next five years, we will have ONDC democratise the e-commerce space in India. We will have a few thousand startups, maybe more and a few hundred unicorns,” he added.

The union minister emphasised on the need to get more startups on the Government E-Marketplace (GeM).There is also the need for neighbouring states align and learn from each other in order to make Indian e-commerce ecosystem the best in the world.  (KNN Bureau)
