Srinagar, Nov 16 (KNN) With the view to boost handicraft sector of the state, Jammu and Kashmir would get its first handicraft museum in its summer capital Srinagar.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asgar Hassan Samoon has asked officials to devise a concept plan for converting old educational structure and adjacent land available at exhibition ground Srinagar into a handicraft museum.

He was addressing a meeting to discuss usage of unused land and building near the exhibition ground.

Samoon asked the tourism department to submit a concept plan to his office within a week for converting the heritage building into a handicraft museum.

It was informed that 13 kanals and 13 marlas of land was available, which can be developed into first-of-its-kind Handicrafts museum in the state.

The divisional commissioner asked officials to remove unauthorised matador stand and vehicle parking from the area and demarcate the entire property.

Handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir have acquired worldwide fame for their exquisite refinement and aesthetic elegance and these crafts have great diversity and demand.

There are nearly 2.50 lacs artisans directly dependent upon handicrafts in the state for their livelihood and there is still great potential for more employment to be generated in this sector if markets are expanded and demand is increased. (KNN Bureau)
