Tiruvananthapuram, Oct 1 (KNN)  To prevent potential job losses in the Information Technology (IT) industry, on a large scale, especially in the small and medium business sector, Kerala’s IT industry has appealed to UPA Chief, to restore the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) Scheme in both tier 2 and 3 cities in the country.

According to media reports, representatives of Group of Technology Companies (GTech) which belong to the IT industry in Kerala met with UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi yesterday to urge her to revive the STPI scheme.

The representatives made a strong appeal on behalf of the SME IT companies across the country.

The centre can provide the necessary boost to the sector which is the largest employment provider in the private sector, the representation said.

According to the report, the IT industry employs over 30 lakh people while another 95 lakh are indirectly employed through the sector.

Established in 1991 under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, STPI is an export oriented scheme for the development and export of computer software, including export of professional services.

The STP Scheme provides various benefits to the registered units, which includes 100 per cent foreign equity, tax incentives, duty free import, duty free indigenous procurement, CST reimbursement, DTA entitlement, deemed export etc.

STPI has played a vital role in India having earned a reputation as an information technology superpower.

IT SMEs in India face a number of challenges in the competitive global market, along with shortage of funds.  These and other challenges were discussed with Sonia Gandhi.

Significantly, unlike the SEZ scheme, STPI empowers small and medium IT units to operate without any geographical restriction.  (KNN/ES)
