New Delhi, Jun 19 (KNN) Following the cabinet reshuffle, businessman-turned-politician Kavuri Sambasiva Rao (KS Rao) has made an entry into the union council of ministers by taking over as the new Union Minister for Textiles here today.

Rao is a Lok Sabha member from the Eluru constituency of Andhra Pradesh. He has taken the charge from Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma.

Speaking to media persons after taking charge, Rao expressed concern over the current account deficit (CAD) which is affecting the nation’s economy.

He pointed out that the textiles sector was one sector where we could increase the exports substantially.

“I am given to understand that our export in textiles is about USD 34 billion today, which I wish to make at least USD 50 billion by the year end. For this we have to encourage skill development, and speak to all the industrialists in particular to find out their exact problems, what type of support they require from the government and how they will be able to increase the exports. And that will solve the problem of CAD also and the country will be out of woes,” he said.

Rao also assured that the Ministry will do everything possible to provide employment in a big way to poor sections of the society, increase exports in a big way and do justice to cotton growers as well as handloom weavers.

Emphasising that skill development was paramount, Rao said, “When there are skills with the people of the country, the growth will go up, the production will go up, the cost of production will come down, and then we will be able to compete in the international market.”

He hopes to encourage providing skills to all people, preferably freely.

Born on October 2, 1943 in Dosapadu in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Rao got his engineering degree from the Regional Engineering College in Warangal.  Having business interests in real estate and construction, he was first elected as an MP in 1984 and was re-elected in 1989, 1998, 2004 and 2009.  He had represented the Machilipatnam seat earlier.
