K'taka govt nurturing entrepreneurship among IT MSMEs in smaller cities

Bengaluru, June 19 (KNN) Karnataka government is giving special emphasis to push entrepreneurship among IT MSMEs in smaller cities, which cater to the domestic IT market.
“The government for the past seven years, through the Department of IT, BT and S&T, has been providing a special pavilion for the MSMEs in the State’s flagship event, Bangalore ITE.biz. Now after seven years, we want to push entrepreneurship through Karnataka i4 Policy among MSMEs in smaller cities,” SR Patil, Karnataka Minister for IT, BT and Science & Technology, Planning and Statistics has said, according to a media report.
Karnataka has about 2,500 registered IT companies of which over a 1,000 IT enterprises are MSME and operating in Bengaluru, along with multinationals.
“These small enterprises cater to the domestic IT market and have on an average each have 20 employees. Now looking at this scenario emerging, the state government has already started – ‘Startups Warehouse’ concept in association with Nasscom, it has paid off pretty well for us,” said Patil.
“The IT & BT department has inked MoU with Nasscom for the second Startups Warehouse in about 3,600 sq ft of built-up space with about 400 seats,” he added.
The startups are mainly in the data analysis, cloud computing and mobile space, and are doing very well as can be seen from the mushrooming of e-tailing and e-commerce businesses, Patil said.
“Innovation riding on technology is of great importance for the growth of an economy. Bangalore has emerged as the hub and is riding on innovation,” he said.
There are over 400 research and development (R&D) institutions in Bengaluru, accounting for 50 per cent of the country’s R&D institutions, and over one lakh PhDs are employed in them, according to Nasscom statistics.
“We have over 10 lakh IT professionals directly employed in the 2,500 plus IT companies, apart from the 30 lakh indirect jobs created by the IT sector. Bangalore perhaps has the largest pool of technical talent and a well-developed intellectual infrastructure for innovation to thrive,” Patil added. (KNN Bureau)
