The Director, Economic Research (KVIC) has invited bids from agencies and institutions which will be awarded the job of evaluating the effectiveness of ongoing schemes such as market development assistance (MDA), enhancing productivity and competitiveness of the industry and artisans, strengthening of infrastructure of existing weak institutions and assistance for marketing infrastructure, workshed scheme for khadi artisans, etc.
Khadi has been a source of livelihood for more than 8.5 lakh persons who are engaged in the activity as spinners, weavers and artisans spread across the country.
In order to increase efficiency and productivity of the artisans, KVIC has introduced programmes like workshed scheme for khadi artisans (WSKA), which is an attempt to facilitate the development of spinners and weavers by way of providing them financial assistance for construction of worksheds on a pilot basis.
Financial assistance will be provided to those artisans who belong to below poverty line (BPL) category.
Further, with the help of the MDA programme, financial assistance is provided to production units at 20 per cent of value of production of khadi and polyvastra (cotton khadi, silk khadi, wollen khadi and polyvastra).
Similarly, a total of 59 institutions were selected for assistance during 2011-12 for enhancing productivity and competitiveness of this industry and its artisans. The target for assisting 43 institutions in 2012-13 has been fixed recently.
