Mumbai, Jan 7 (KNN)   Indian Railways has around 8000 stations and the premises of some of them have very few trains and scanty footfall.  Such premises will be used for skill development activities according to Minister of Railways, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu.

The Minister was addressing a function on the occasion of the release of a book titled “Twenty Five Years Journey of Lupin Foundation” brought out by Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation and a CD regarding tourism scenario in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on Tuesday.

Citing that Indian Railways was keen to assist in skill development, Prabhu said that his ministry would also help in marketing rural products made by self-help groups and other such agencies so as to help common rural people.

Referring to the Konkani-cuisine restaurant ‘Konkan Swaad Katta’ recently set up at Ratnagiri station in Konkan Railway, the minister said that such initiatives will encourage traditional businesses and local talent and will help in the financial empowerment of local people while allowing passengers to savour traditional Konkani dishes.

He also emphasised the marketing potential of the railway PSU, IRCTC whose website is hit by several lakhs people every day. He said that a pilot project could be started to sell rural products through e-commerce activity of IRCTC website.

Prabhu further said that non-state actors can intervene more in the field of economic development of common people and for this there is a need to synergise between NGOs, Corporates and the government.

Agencies like NABARD have been playing an important role in rural sector and rural empowerment and other agencies can take their help in rural development, he added.

The book that was released presents the story of Lupin Foundation’s 25 years of work for rural India.  Visiting the organisational memory lanes, the memoir portrays the development work, evolving of approaches and strategies during this absorbing journey of the foundation in the service of rural India, which began on October 2, 1988, long before the corporate social responsibility concept was accepted widely.

The railway minister also released a video CD about various aspects of tourist potential in Sindhudurg in Maharashtra which will help in creating awareness about Sindhudurg as a new tourism destination in India.

The Railway PSU, IRCTC can promote tourism in this region which will lead to creating jobs for the locals and help overall prosperity of the area.

Managing Director and CEO of the National Skill Development Corporation Dilip Chenoy, Deputy Managing Director, SIDBI NK Maini, Managing Director, NABARD HR Dave, Director General, CII Chandrajit Bose and Executive Director, Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation, Sita Ram Gupta were also present on the occasion.
