Madurai, Jan 2 (KNN) Despite the increase in  unemployment amongst the youth, the Madurai industries are facing the problem of acute labour shortage both skilled and unskilled,  mainly in the sectors like textile, rubber and plastic, leading to problems like migration,  stress on urban areas, low  production etc.

President of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA), V Manimaran told KNN that, “One of the main reasons for the labour shortage is migration. The youth are migrating out of state and also within the state even for little more wages.

“Labours from Madurai are now mostly going to Tirupur and Coimbatore, as there are big industries which offer then Rs 400-500 wage daily for 15 hours. But here the small industries can’t offer them this much, that too for 10 hours shift,” Manimaran added.

Recently, Tamil Nadu State Rural Livelihood Mission (TNSRLM) and Pudhu Vazhvu project organized a recruitment drive for youth belonging to the age group of 18 and 35 years and with educational qualifications beyond Class VIII from four districts in the state. Under the programme, total of 1,037 people had registered.

Of those who registered for the drive, more than 300 candidates received the job on the spot, while about 250 candidates were selected provisionally, according to a media report.

Manimaran said that, “Many industries come to us with the problem to labour shortage which is hampering their production also. We need good people in industries for works like rubber moulding, plastic moulding, spinning and weaving.”

To overcome the problem of skilled labour shortage, MADITSSIA is planning to impart skill development training to the youth in Madurai to bridge the gap between employees and employers.
According to MADITSSIA chief, the government schemes like MGNREGA are also one of the reasons for the shortage.

Industries believe that many migrating graduates after facing the lack of jobs opportunities according to their qualification finally seek employment that is below their educational qualification in the big cities but they are not willing to come back to their home towns to work in small organizations.
