Srinagar, Jun 13 (KNN) The Jammu and Kashmir Energy development agency (EDA) is taking a major initiative for promotion and use of solar energy among the households in the state.

To implement the project, the J&K EDA will source as many as 45,000 solar lighting systems conforming to the standards laid by the central government.

Several countries including India are taking measures to adapt more and more the use of solar energy.  Many states have taken initiatives to use renewable energy – there are solar LED lamps installed in the Ludhiana Railway Station; Cochin International Airport uses solar power for running its utility grid system etc.

Not only are the government and states adapting to the use of solar energy;  corporates and private individuals are also coming up with innovative examples of its effective usage.

However, there is an inter-ministerial difference in the strategy. Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in May, had recommended imposition of duty of USD 0.11 to USD 0.81 per watt on solar cells imported from the US, China, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has opposed the Commerce Ministry’s recommendation on imposing a restrictive duty on imported solar cells saying that several projects already in the pipeline.

The Commerce Ministry yesterday again favoured imposition of anti-dumping duty on solar cells and said it would boost manufacturing in the country and attract foreign investments in the sector. (KNN/SD)
