Mangoes exports likely to surge to record 500 tonne this year

The US prefers irradiation to get rid of an insect pest mango seed weevils and fruit fly from the fruits.
At present, India has only one irradiation centre in Lasalgaon in the Nashik district of Maharashtra with a processing capacity of 10-15 tonnes per day.
"The overall mango exports to US are expected to reach a record 400-500 tonnes this year," said a senior official of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority was quoted as having said in a media report.
India is world’s largest grower of the fruit. Last year the country shipped about 209 tonnes of mangoes to the United States.
This year, since April first week, India has exported 90 tonnes of mangoes, mainly from the western region. The exports mainly comprise 'Alfonso' and 'Kesar' varieties.
However, record exports will depend on supply of quality UP.
The country's overall mango exports are expected to be around 83,000 tonnes this year, while the domestic production is estimated to be around 15 lakh tonnes.
According to the report, traders have managed to get good orders this time due to strong demand .
Indian mangoes are being exported at Rs 150-175 per kg at fob (freight on board), almost the same price as last year. (KNN)
