Meat dependent small industries in UP out of business post crackdown on illegal slaughter houses

New Delhi, Apr 19 (KNN) The newly elected government In Uttar Pradesh led by CM Yogi Adityanath recently implemented strict set of rules against the illegal slaughterhouses in the state.

The meat industry in the state is linked to three other vital industries namely the meat industry, the livestock industry and leather industry. Uttar Pradesh till the implementation of the new rules by the Yogi Government ranked among the top three states that supply majority of the raw material along with Punjab, Bihar and West Bengal.

The meat dependent MSMEs in the food sector are worried of indicators such as stagnant agriculture and industry and also fear a gap in the manufacturing cycle due to the unavailability of the resources because of the new policy.

Talking to KNN, Tasleem Kamal of the ALM Industries said that because of the crackdown the meat and leather industry is in a bad shape. The operations are badly hit by the ongoing campaign against the slaughter houses. Many of the meat dependent industries are out of business.

He explained the problem with the ‘blanket policy’ of the government. “While we agree that the slaughter houses should have proper licences, but there is huge ambiguity on what is legal and what is illegal slaughter house” he added.

Talking on the situation further Kamal grieved that the process of getting a licence is very cumbersome, moreover the government is not granting licenses to any slaughterhouses at the moment.

Kamal informed that ever since the new policy was implemented, many meat industry associations have met the Chief Minister. The CM assured that he will ensure that the industry is not left to suffer for long.

Meat-packaging and leather industries collectively make up a major share of India’s export earnings. According to the data published by the Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA) 43 per cent of buffalo meat exports in the previous year was from U.P. (KNN/ DA)
