New Delhi, Mar 21 (KNN)  Microsoft is adding clients in India across different sectors of the industry including the small and medium enterprises, even as the country will receive renewed focus, while figuring on the forefront of the company’s ‘mobile first, cloud first’ strategy.

“We are extremely serious about the small and medium business (SMB) sector,” Microsoft India’s Chairman Bhaskar Pramanik told Business Standard yesterday, adding that they had many programs to cater to SMBs and that an announcement will be made in that regard shortly.

In his opinion, technology adoption by SMBs has been very low, because of the complexity of technology.

“But the new world of the cloud has removed that barrier.  You can now have Microsoft Office 365 delivered to you as a service at your desktop, on your mobile, tablet or any other device.

“Nadella believes India has the opportunity to leapfrog to cloud based technologies, especially in the SMB to take advantage of the huge cost reduction,” Pramanik said referring to the Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella, who took over the reins early last month.

In a press release, Microsoft India yesterday announced that a significant portion of its growth in India during the last 12 months has come from its cloud businesses.

“Microsoft is powering the cloud transition in India with Windows Azure and a set of comprehensive offerings across private, hybrid and public clouds,” Pramanik said at the Windows Azure Conference in Bengaluru.

“We are adding over 2000 commercial cloud customers every month in India and these are customers across all industry sectors – banking, manufacturing, healthcare and media, and across large, mid-sized and small companies,” he added.

Scalability, reduced costs, flexibility, business agility and speed in new service roll-out are some of the reasons enterprises in India are attracted to cloud services. With its large partner and developer eco-system, Microsoft is helping Indian organisations assess and transition to the cloud easily. Microsoft has 10,000 partners and engages with an ecosystem of 1.6 million developers in the country.

Currently, Windows Azure Enterprise customers in India include private banks, auto manufacturers, healthcare organisations, media houses and small industry.

“Our investments in improving the readiness of our partners and developers, is enabling faster cloud adoption. We are in a mobile-first, cloud-first world and cloud is becoming an integral part of the IT infrastructure in Indian enterprises today,” said the release quoting Managing Director, Microsoft India Karan Bajwa.

Microsoft has been investing significantly to improve cloud capabilities among partners and developers. In the last year, the company has grown the number of its cloud solution partners by 200 per cent, has seen a 100 per cent growth in the number of independent software vendor (ISV) applications on Windows Azure and helped 1700 start-ups adopt Windows Azure. Microsoft is also partnering with academic institutions to create Microsoft Innovation Centres – of which 39 are now operational. The company has conducted 2000 training sessions for over 200,000 developers and IT professionals in the last year.

“Azure is a powerful platform for the entire Indian ecosystem of IT professionals, developers and start-ups to bring their applications to market worldwide. It helps Indian customers leapfrog to the cloud, and accrue significant cost savings. It provides a unique opportunity for our partners to scale their business. I believe the opportunities ahead for India with the Azure cloud platform are tremendous,” the press release said quoting CEO, Microsoft Corporation Satya Nadella, in his address via a video message to the participants of the Windows Azure Conference in Bengaluru yesterday.

In the last few years, cloud computing has evolved from a buzzword to a critical infrastructure component of many enterprise and consumer services. The cloud provides virtually limitless compute, storage, and network resources at low cost, allowing services to scale on demand.  The cloud absolves organizations from managing IT infrastructure, and allows them to focus on their core competencies.

Microsoft approaches cloud computing as a way to help customers take a key step toward better business agility, economics, and user experiences. For many modern CIOs and technology leaders, the cloud presents an opportunity to redefine the role IT plays in implementing a business’s strategy. Because of its power to fundamentally change how businesses operate and compete, the cloud is a game changer for the enterprise. (KNN/ES)
