Mumbai, Feb 15 (KNN) In order to ensure inclusive growth in the IT industry, Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi wants India to reducing dependence on imports of electronic items and focus on promoting hardware  as much as software.

Speaking about the big share of electronic imports in the economy during the 25th Nasscom leadership summit through a video link here yesterday, Modi emphasised to focus on manufacturing as well as the services sector to ensure growth.

“Already our electronics imports are a big share in the import basket. In a few years from now, it is estimated that their import bill will become bigger than even Oil. The hunger for electronics goods is going up. Thus, you can understand the challenge.  We must focus on manufacturing,” Modi said while addressing the Summit.

“We have to particularly hurry up on manufacturing in strategic sectors like defence. We cannot afford to keep importing for all our needs,” he added.

Modi also said that, “So far, software and internet had been limited to people. When it reaches to things and activities, the digital divide will truly go away. The IT industry will flourish. Your market will expand. Our country will progress.”

Speaking on the issue of Digital Divide, Gujarat Chief Minister said, “To my mind, Digital Divide means that what a person can get through IT in a city is not available to the person in a remote village.

“For this, the software is as responsible as the hardware. We have marketed hardware a lot. From phones to laptops. We see strength in that. But real strength lies in software utility. What are we doing about that?”

He also said that the Indian IT industry can promote digital inclusion by strengthening cyber security and empowering the youth. “India’s talent plus information technology is equal to India’s tomorrow. IT sector can be the shining light of Brand India,” Modi said.

He further said that, “The Government, the institutions and IT industry will have to create stronger ties to bring the results on ground.”
NASSCOM can play a very big role in this process, he said adding that “We just need to empower our youth with skills so that they can ensure their own development and growth of India…Our IT industry and IT manpower have enhanced the image of the country in the world. Now, it is time the IT revolution takes place in India.”

Describing IT as a change-agent, Modi said IT has the power to transform the country in several ways.

“I see the role of IT as an agent of change. It empowers, connects and can bind different parts of India and create harmony.”

India’s electronics import bill is estimated to touch USD 320 billion (Rs.17.12 trillion) by 2020, possibly exceeding that of crude oil, while the domestic demand for electronics is estimated to touch USD 400 billion by 2020. (KNN/SD)
