More handloom and handicrafts exhibitions in the offing

New Delhi, Aug 26 (KNN)  The government plans to organize more textile design exhibitions to provide a boost to the handloom and handicraft sector and at the same time help powerloom weavers to market their products.

“The Government proposes to organize more such exhibitions in future depending upon the number of viable proposals received under the above schemes and availability of funds,” said Minister of Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi in the Lok Sabha today.

According to her, the government provides financial assistance to various implementing agencies like central/state handicrafts corporations/apex societies and NGOs who are working with artisans to organize such exhibitions in the country to provide a marketing platform for the products developed by artisans.

Over the last three years, a total of 1858 domestic events in the Handloom Sector and 666 handicrafts exhibitions were organised in the country including the backward areas.  Also, participation in 68 international handloom events has been approved and spot orders worth Rs 67.41 crore have been booked.

As far as the current year is concerned, upto July as many as 242 domestic events and participation in 16 international events have been approved.

The Government is currently implementing an Integrated Scheme for Powerloom Sector Development (ISPSD), under which 42 Buyer Seller Meets (BSM) were organized across the country during last three years for Marketing Development of powerloom products. This has helped powerloom weavers to market their products at regional and cluster level in the country.

While the ISPSD is still under approval for the remaining 12th plan period, one BSM has been conducted during current year.

“For International exhibition/fairs, the artisans who have been conferred Shilp Guru Award and National Awards are considered for participation in fairs/festival abroad subject to condition that their sales turnover is more than Rs 10.00 lakhs per annum or have exported handicrafts goods worth minimum of Rs 2.00 lakhs in the preceding year, provided total exports in proceeding year is not more than Rs 50.00 lakhs,” the official notification said.

The schemes through which the government provides financial assistance to various implementing agencies are - Baba Sahib Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY); Marketing and Support Service Scheme; Design and Technology Upgradation Scheme; Research and Development Scheme; Human Resource Development Scheme; and Handicrafts Artisans Comprehensive Welfare Scheme.  (KNN/ES)
