New Delhi, Sept 8 (KNN)  In a move to tackle counterfeit and sub-standard products, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity) has initiated a surveillance programme of certain notified products to ensure quality control.

Keeping pace with the growing consumption of electronic products, the Indian ICT (information and communication technology) industry is also gradually increasing.  By 2020, India is expected to consume USD 320 billion worth of ICT products annually, reports media.

To ensure that consumers get access to safe and good quality technology products, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has initiated the creation of an appropriate policy ecosystem.  It is with this in mind that the government had notified the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for compulsory Registration Order) in 2012.

As a part of National Policy on Electronics (NPE), the activity of developing and mandating standards has been adopted by the Government of India with a view to provide Indian consumers with the right to enjoy world class goods; upgrade the quality of domestic products for bringing global competitiveness; develop strategy to stop dumping of non-compliant goods; and for projecting a positive image internationally as a country with quality production of the Electronics and IT goods.

The Compulsory Registration Order, notified by DeitY has ensured registration of products by both domestic and international manufacturers, and in doing so curbing inflow of sub-standard goods.

Further, special measures have been initiated to provide financial assistance to MSMEs and reducing compliance effort with simpler and effective labelling, reduced timelines and greater transparency.

Electronic products covered under compulsory registration are video games, visual display units, amplifiers, laptops/notebooks/tablets, printer/plotters, electronic music sytem, LCD/LED/Plasma TVs, automated data processing machines, scanner, electronic clocks, optical disc players, wireless keyboards, set top boxes, microwave ovens, telephone answering machines.

The Department now plans to engage agencies to provide services for picking up samples of notified electronic goods from manufacturing units/ports/markets etc.  (KNN/ES)
