NASVI meets MoS Hardeep Singh Puri, Police Commissioner to discuss street vendors' issue in national capital

New Delhi, Jan 18 (KNN) A delegation from National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) led by National Coordinator,  Arbind Singh met with the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri on January 16th to discuss the issue of the street vendors in the capital.

The issues pertained to the functioning of the Town Vending Committees (TVC) declaration of the Vending and Non- Vending Zones, the status of the vendors of the heritage market of Karol Bagh and also setting up Grievance Redressal and Dispute Resolution Committees in each local authority.

''Hardeep Singh Puri paid close attention to each of our requests and assured us that prompt action will be taken to restore the order for the street vendors in Delhi. The Street Vendors Act of 2014 is one of the most important legislation passed and it is imperative that its implementation is done to the fullest for the benefit of the street vendors all over,'' NASVI quoted Puri as saying.

NASVI also met with the Police Commissioner, Amulya Patnaik where it was discussed the issue of the continual harassment and unjustified evictions carried out by the Police Authorities which is in complete contravention of the Act.

The street vendors from various markets like Lajpat Nagar, Jama Masjid, Sarojini Nagar and Karol Bagh to name a few complained about the extortion of money that takes place in the name of vending, NASVI said.

''We were told that necessary steps shall be taken to manage the excesses that have been taking place and make it a more inclusive space for the vendors and allowing them to carry out their business,'' NASVI added.

NASVI is determined to get the issues of the street vendors in the forefront and to ensure that the Act is implemented in entirety at earliest.
