National jute board to modernise jute industry in West Bengal

Kolkata, Jun 14, (KNN) The West Bengal government in its efforts to modernise the jute industry had called for bids from reputed agencies to prepare a techno commercial feasibility report under jute technology Mini mission IV.  The date has now been extended until June-28.   

There is huge demand of jute diversified products like fancy jute sheet bag, jute fibre bags, wall hanging, jute mats, jute yarn, jute toys, jute garments in the market throughout the state, according to National Jute Board.

Further, quality jute products have a sizeable demand not only in West Bengal but also all over India and abroad for which the hired agency will give advice to facilitate improvement of the sector.

The state has been increasingly promoting jute as it is environment friendly and bio-degradable.

The Ministry of Textiles has constituted the National Jute Board (NJB) to grapple with various challenges facing the jute sector.

Currently, the industry is faced with problems like low wages for workers, owing to which may workers are being forced to switch to construction sites.   Workers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and parts of south India especially have shown lesser interest in the jute industry, which has led to shortage of manpower, according to a report.  (KNN)
