NCCD to set technical standards for cold chain

New Delhi, Nov 20 (KNN)  The National Centre for Cold Chain Development (NCCD) has plans to put in place technical standards for cold chain infrastructure for perishable food items such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

With the primary aim of reducing wastages and improving gains to farmers and consumers substantially, NCCD works in close collaboration with industry and other stake holders to promote and develop integrated cold chain in India for perishable F&V and other perishable allied agri – commodities.

The Government had approved an amount of Rs 25 crore as budgetary provision for XI Plan period towards creation of cold chain infrastructure as well as establishment of NCCD.

Established by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2011 as an autonomous body, NCCD has a mandate to prescribe technical standards for cold chain infrastructure for perishable food items, including fresh fruits and vegetables and undertaking their periodic revision, besides human resources development programmes for meeting the needs of skilled manpower of the cold chain sector.

It has various committees that take forward it objectives, namely - Technical specification and Standards Committees; Project preparation, Appraisal and Project Certification Committee; Training and HRD Committee; R&D Committee; Test Laboratory and Product Certification Committee; Application of Non-conventional Energy Sources in Cold Chain Infrastructure.

The establishment of cold chain is being supported through programmes of NHM (National Horticulture Mission), NHB (National Horticulture Board), APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) and Ministry of Food Processing Industries.   (KNN/ES)
