New Delhi, Mar 6 (KNN) New and Renewable Energy Sector is estimated to have created over 50,000 direct jobs during the last three years in off-grid and other applications of the sector.
Installation and commissioning of a 1-2 Mega Watt (MW) Photo Voltaic (PV) project generates employment for nearly 40 people, it is estimated bythe Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.  This number hadincreased by approximately 15 for every additional 1 MW capacity.
In the case of solar thermal projects, it is estimated that up to 500 personnel are currentlyemployed in a 20 MW capacity power project.  During the last three years 419.21 Million Units (MU) (upto Jan 2013) of solar energy has been generated.
At the organisation and method stage, as per rough estimates, 1-2 persons are required per MW depending on the project size.
“India today stands among the top five countries of the world in terms of renewable energy capacity. We have an installed base of around 12 per cent of India’s total power generation capacity and renewable energy now contributes to over 6 per cent in our electricity mix. New investment in renewable energy in India has now exceeded US $ 10 billion per year,” said Minister of New and Renewable Energy (NRE), Farooq Abdullah at a recent meeting here.
The minister also explained that the National Action Plan on Climate Change mandates an increase in the share of renewable power in the electricity mix to 15 percent by the year 2020.   In that regard, his Ministry had already developed an action plan that aimed at accelerating the deployment of renewable energy.
“We have set up a target of around 55 GW of renewable power by 2017. In addition a large number of decentralized renewable energy systems for meeting lighting, cooking and productive needs have also been planned,” he added.
In April 2002, renewable energy based power generation installed capacity was 3475 MW which was 2 % of the total installed capacity in the country. As on Dec 31, 2010, it has reached 18, 655 MW, which is about 11% of the total installed capacity of 1, 68, 945 MW and corresponds to a contribution of about 4.13% in the electricity mix, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
In addition, the state wise monthly generation from renewable energy sources during April 2012 to August 2012 totalled 23557.7444 MU that included Rajasthan-2311.195 MU, Gujarat-3818.269 MU, Karnataka - 3603.754 MU, Maharashtra - 2865.137 MU and Tamil Nadu- 8749.429 MU.
In the meantime, the government has constituted an Offshore Wind Energy Steering Committeeto direct the offshore wind energy development in India in a directed and focused manner, according to an official statement said.
The committee constituted under the chairmanship of Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), comprises members of associated stakeholder ministries who would also look after inter-agency coordination.
Development of offshore wind energy projects depends upon firming of wind resource, oceanographic studies, environmental impact assessment, infrastructure to support fabrication, interconnection and evacuation of electricity from these systems, clearances required from various ministries, stakeholders, etc.
India ranks 5th in terms of installed capacity from wind energy projects globally which has reached 18522 MW at the end of January this year. The preliminary assessment along the coastline suggests that there could be potential to develop offshore wind energy along Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra coasts.  (KNN/Gunj)
