New PSU on earth science on anvil

New Delhi, May 29 (KNN) In a move to leverage the ocean technology, the Centre will be setting up a public sector undertaking, most likely to be called National Earth Systems Enterprise (NESE).
The initiative to set up NESE has been taken by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). The Chennai based institute is a technical arm of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, functioning with broad objectives of promoting technology development in various mission mode activities in ocean engineering and ocean resource utilization.
MoES had proposed an amount of Rs 10 crore for NESE which would be a 100 per cent Government of India Undertaking.
The Ministry has under its control: Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology; National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research; National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (Noida); Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) (Hyderabad); India Meteorological Department (IMD); National Institute of Ocean Technology (Chennai); Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology; and Integrated Coastal and Marine Area Management (Chennai).
These organisations are involved in the field of Atmospheric Sciences, Ocean related scientific work, research work at Polar Regions and seismology. During the process of research, these organisations generate a lot of research data and develop new technologies which are beneficial to many sectors like aviation, shipping, agriculture, petroleum, coastal marine, fisheries communities, tourism, sports, defence, etc.
At present there has been no effort to commercially generate resources by selling the research data, advisories and technologies to the prospective clients. However, some organisations like IMD, INCOIS are earning some amount by way of selling their data, advisories, etc.
The major aim of starting NIOT is to develop reliable indigenous technology to solve the various engineering problems associated with harvesting of non-living and living resources in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which is about two-thirds of the land area of India.
In this regard, MoEs seeks qualified and experienced individuals to undertake the work relating to setting up of the PSU as senior advisor on contract basis. (KNN/ES)
