NITI Aayog organises workshop on Transforming Urban India

New Delhi, Sept 3 (KNN) NITI Aayog organised a workshop titled “Transforming Urban India: Developing Smart and Sustainable Cities” here at India International Centre on Wednesday.

Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), Bengaluru was the knowledge partner for the event attended by over 250 participants with over 100 representatives from states and union territories.

Participants ideated on some of the critical aspects that enhance the quality of life in a city and make a city sustainable.

As the Smart Cities Mission and Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Transformation have been recently launched, it was emphasised that the Centre and states will work together to take these forward.

Ministry of Urban Development and NITI Aayog will facilitate the states in implementing these missions.

There was an enthusiastic participation by various from various stakeholders including state governments, urban local bodies (ULBs), central government ministries, experts, academia and industry in the workshop.

A report proposing a Reference Framework for Smart Cities, prepared by CSTEP, Bengaluru, was also released at this event.

The Report proposes a reference framework for smart cities that offers directions for sustainable ways of city planning to both practitioners and theorists. The framework is based on the four guiding principles such as Well-being; Equity; Efficiency; and Foresight.

These guiding principles have been derived from the United Nation’s (UN’s) draft Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Framework primarily aims to crystallise future pathways for smart city development in India.

The workshop was chaired by Member NITI Aayog, Bibek Debroy. CEO, NITI Aayog, Mrs Sindhushree Khullar and Chairman, CSTEP, VS Arunachalam addressed the participants. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Sameer Sharma, made a presentation on Smart Cities Mission Guidelines. (KNN Bureau)
