'No proposal at present' to reopen jute mills: Textile Ministry

New Delhi, Feb 19 (KNN) Ministry of Textiles said today that there is no proposal at present to reopen the closed jute mills although the government has taken up revival of three jute mills.

The jute industry is in severe crisis after a number of jute mills are facing closure due to shortage of orders and slow demand globally. 

“The Government of India has taken up revival of three jute mills of National Jute Manufacturers Corporation Limited (NJMC) a Central Public Sector Enterprises, namely, Khardah (West Bengal), Kinnison (West Bengal),” Minister of State for Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi said in parliament today.

There is no such proposal at present to reopen closed jute mills, she said. 

The ministry also informed parliament that the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme been approved for continuation for the entire 12th Five Year Plan period (2012-2017).

India today has around 84 jute mills. Jute mills are located in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tripura and Chhattisgarh.

The average export of jute goods (in the last four years) is around 178 thousand tons at Rs 11456 million per annum.

The jute industry employ almost 2.53 lakh workers directly and an additional 1.6 lakh as allied regions. In addition there are a large number of persons engaged in the trade of jute. (KNN/SD)
