Odisha to set up centre of excellence in floriculture in Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar, Feb 4 (KNN)  The Directorate of Horticulture in Odisha is planning to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Floriculture in the Kandhamal / Keonjhar district, based on Indo-Israel technology.
 
“Protected cultivation utilizing Israel technologies has been found to be beneficial in increasing productivity of high value flowers in small unit area,” said an official notice.
 
The Directorate of Horticulture will set up the CoE on government land available in comparatively cooler regions of the state like Kandhamal / Keonjhar where in cultivation of various floriculture crops will be taken up using Indo-Israel technologies such as cultivation under Poly-Green house, Shade-Net house and Poly-Tunnels.
 
Floriculture is one of the important branches of horticulture which can ensure higher income per unit.    In order to have strategic development of floriculture, advanced technologies that are internationally acceptable have to be adopted.
 
In this context, the Directorate has called for bids from agencies of national/international repute that will be responsible for establishment of structures, cultivation and provide support for one year after completion of the structures.
 
Horticultural activities starting from planting material production to post harvest management including plantation programme of various horticultural crops have gained momentum in the state of Odisha due to implementation of National Horticultural Mission since 2005-06.
 
To increase planting material potential of the state around 35 model nurseries and 13 small nurseries have been established in public sector and 7 model nurseries and 89 small nurseries under private sector. 
 
New gardens have been established covering an area of one lakh ha for Mango, 28500 ha Cashew, 1130 ha Aonla, 890 ha Litchi, 847 ha Orange, 1224 ha K lime and about 7500 ha of banana.
 
Under floriculture around 11000 ha area is under cultivation of different commercial flowers like Rose, Gladioli, Tuberose and Marigold etc, while Ginger and Turmeric cultivation has been popularized in around 7500 ha.
 
Under protected cultivation along with other components, 26300 nos of shade net houses have been established.  Further, to promote organic farming 3500 vermi compost units are in operation in farmer’s field.
 
In addition, for exposure visit 13150 farmers have been given training inside the state, 3553 farmer have given training outside the state and 1600 farmers have undergone training within the district.
 
To showcase Horticultural activities in the state 4 State level shows and 50 district level shows have been organized.  (KNN/ES)
