BIS Extends Standard Mark License Validity To 5 Years, Industry Body Hails Move
New Delhi, Mar 10 (KNN) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has extended the validity of licences for the use of its Standard Mark from two years to five years.
This rule under the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Amendment Regulations, 2026, aims at improving ease of doing business for industry.
Licence Validity Amended
Under the amended provisions of Schedule-II, Scheme-I, BIS licences will now be initially granted for up to five years and may be renewed for further five-year periods, subject to payment of annual fees on an advance yearly basis. Earlier, BIS licences were typically issued for a maximum period of two years, requiring more frequent renewals.
The revised framework also allows manufacturers to apply for licence renewal for two, three, four or five years, in line with the updated fee structure.
Industry Reaction
Industry bodies have described the move as a structural reform that reduces compliance burden and enhances regulatory certainty. According to the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association, extending the validity period will reduce renewal frequency, cut administrative overheads and allow companies to focus more on operations and expansion.
The association noted that longer licence validity will particularly benefit MSMEs and fast-growing manufacturing firms, enabling better long-term planning and reducing compliance friction.
Industry stakeholders also said the change aligns India’s certification framework more closely with global best practices while strengthening confidence in the BIS Standard Mark.
