DoT Calls for Proposals to Establish Quantum Standardisation and Testing Lab to Boost Technological Advancements

New Delhi, Jul 8 (KNN) In a move to propel India to the forefront of quantum technology, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced a call for proposals titled "Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs." 

This initiative, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Jai Anusandhan' (Hail Research), seeks to accelerate research and development in quantum technologies while ensuring the interoperability, reliability, and security of quantum communication systems.

The DoT is inviting submissions from Indian academic and R&D institutions, either individually or in partnership, to establish these cutting-edge facilities. The deadline for proposal submissions is set for August 5, 2024.

These labs will serve as innovation hubs, bringing together quantum technology developers, testing equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers. The primary objectives include quantum standardisation and testing facilities. 

For standardisation, the labs will establish benchmarks and protocols for integrating quantum communication elements into existing and future networks. 

In terms of testing, they will develop reliable infrastructure to validate quantum concepts, processes, devices, and applications created by Indian industry members, including startups and academic institutions.

The initiative aims to make these facilities easily accessible to industry, startups, and local telecom stakeholders at nominal fees, ensuring widespread benefits from advanced quantum technologies. 

Technologies slated for testing include single photon and entangled photon sources, single photon detectors, quantum memories and repeaters, quantum communication modules, and trusted and untrusted nodes.

This ambitious project not only supports the development of secure, reliable, and efficient quantum communication systems but also aims to improve the everyday lives of Indian citizens through enhanced communication, data security, and overall digital experience. 

By fostering indigenous quantum technology solutions, India is positioning itself as a potential leader in global quantum standards. 

This initiative represents a significant step towards self-reliance in quantum technologies and sets the stage for India to make substantial contributions to this rapidly evolving field.
