New Delhi, Feb 24 (KNN) The Government of India has appointed Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an official order released on Saturday.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet specified that Das's tenure will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister's term or until further orders, whichever comes first.
Das will serve alongside the current Principal Secretary, Pramod Kumar Mishra, who has held the position since September 2019 and was reappointed in June 2024.
Dr. Mishra, a 1972 batch officer and former agriculture secretary to the Government of India, has worked closely with Prime Minister Modi for the past decade, including his previous role as Additional Principal Secretary from 2014 to 2019.
Shaktikanta Das brings extensive experience in governance and financial administration to his new role. He served as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, assuming office on December 12, 2018.
His prior positions included Secretary of the Department of Revenue and Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance, Member of the 15th Finance Commission, and India's G20 Sherpa.
With more than 38 years of experience in public service, Das has established himself as a distinguished civil servant specialising in finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure.
His tenure at the Ministry of Finance was particularly noteworthy, as he played an instrumental role in preparing eight Union Budgets.
A postgraduate from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, Das has also represented India as Alternate Governor in prominent global financial institutions, including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, New Development Bank, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
His international experience extends to representing India at major forums such as the IMF, G20, BRICS, and SAARC.
