Govt mulls BIS to officiate as quality authority for lighters
New Delhi, Dec 30 (KNN) The Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT) is considering to make the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as the certifying and enforcing authority for lighters.
According to the draft Order issued for public consultations prescribes that lighters shall conform to the corresponding Indian Standard and shall bear the Standard Mark under a license from the BIS, said the notification.
DPIIT is preparing a Quality Control Order (QCO) for lighters making it mandatory for lighter manufacturers and importers to conform to Indian standards.
Safety specifications for lighters have already been specified under IS/ISO 9994: 2018.
However, the Order shall not be applicable for goods for exports.
As per Ministry sources in the year 2020-21 lighters worth Rs 120 crore were imported.
The QCO will restrict import of cheap quality lighters and encourage domestic manufacturing. (KNN Bureau)
