India Plans Dedicated Maritime Satellite to Strengthen Coastal Governance

New Delhi, Aug 25 (KNN) India is planning to launch a dedicated satellite or acquire a transponder to improve maritime governance and strengthen port operations, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on August 25, 2025.

The initiative aims to provide exclusive coverage across coastal regions, inland waterways, and ports.

The proposed satellite system would integrate with national maritime databases, enabling real-time monitoring of vessel traffic, enhancing navigational safety, and streamlining port management.

Officials believe the move will allow early detection of congestion and support efficient vessel traffic management, making maritime operations more reliable and secure.

Apart from day-to-day operations, the satellite technology is expected to play a crucial role in search and rescue missions, pollution control, and disaster response.

By reducing dependence on foreign navigation systems, the project also aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision of strengthening self-reliance in critical infrastructure.

Highlighting India’s recent achievements in space technology, Minister Sonowal pointed to the successful launch of Aditya-L1, the country’s first solar observatory, and the mission of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station.

He also mentioned upcoming projects, including the Gaganyaan crewed mission and India’s plan to establish its own space station.

Sonowal emphasised that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India is positioning itself as a global leader in space science and technology. The proposed maritime satellite will be another step forward in this journey, ensuring that the country strengthens its maritime domain awareness and enhances coastal security while improving operational efficiency.
