India’s Plumbing Industry Calls for Stronger Standards and Consumer Awareness

New Delhi, Oct 11 (KNN) India’s plumbing industry has undergone significant transformation over the past four decades, shifting from traditional galvanised iron pipes to modern PVC and CPVC systems.

These newer materials offer improved durability, easier installation, and better water quality, marking a major advancement in the sector.

However, despite these improvements, the industry continues to face challenges due to the circulation of substandard plumbing products.

Experts warn that poor-quality pipes often result in leakages, contamination, and high maintenance costs, posing serious risks to water safety and conservation efforts.

While the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued clear quality benchmarks, enforcement remains weak, particularly among smaller manufacturers.

This has allowed inferior products to enter the market unchecked, undermining consumer confidence and the industry’s credibility.

R.K. Sharma, a senior industry expert, emphasised the importance of certified and tested products in ensuring system longevity and safety.

He pointed out that companies investing in research, development, and robust quality control—such as Ajay Pipes, which complies with both BIS and international ASTM standards—set an example for others to follow.

As India continues to urbanise rapidly and implement large-scale housing and infrastructure projects, the demand for reliable plumbing solutions is increasing.

Experts highlight that using certified, high-quality materials is not only crucial for efficiency but also for protecting public health and conserving water.

To build a more resilient and trustworthy industry, experts urge stronger standard enforcement and greater awareness among consumers, builders, and plumbers about identifying certified products.

Quality plumbing, they say, is not just a technical choice—it is an investment in sustainability and safety.
