India’s Wind Industry Seeks Phased Localisation of Key Components

New Delhi, Jul 18 (KNN) India’s wind energy sector has urged the government to implement a phased approach for localising critical wind turbine components, as the industry works to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependence.

According to the Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA) and Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), local manufacturing currently covers up to 80% of turbine components.

However, essential parts such as permanent magnets, bearings, and converters still need to be imported, mainly from China and Europe.

The wind industry has welcomed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) draft quality control order (QCO) for turbine components.

But stakeholders have requested a gradual implementation to give manufacturers enough time to scale up production and develop technical expertise domestically. They also emphasised the need for clear guidelines and consultation before enforcement.

Industry leaders say that an abrupt localisation push without proper preparation may hurt ongoing and future wind energy projects. “A phased implementation is key to ensure uninterrupted project execution while encouraging the development of local supply chains,” said industry representatives.

The sector also highlighted that localisation will boost India's self-reliance goals under the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. It will also improve cost efficiency and reduce logistical risks in the long term.

India aims to significantly ramp up its wind energy capacity as part of its renewable energy targets. With around 44 GW of installed wind capacity, India is the world’s fourth-largest wind market.

However, to meet future goals, the country needs a stronger and more reliable domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

The industry is optimistic that with proper support and phased policy action, India can become a global hub for wind turbine manufacturing.
