NLCIL Partners With BARC To Extract Rare Earth Elements From Fly Ash
New Delhi, Aug 13 (KNN) NLC India Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to develop innovative extraction processes for rare earth elements from fly ash generated by thermal power plants.
The collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing both waste management challenges and strategic resource requirements in India's industrial sector.
The partnership will establish a pilot project at Neyveli with technical expertise provided by BARC to demonstrate the viability of the extraction methodology.
According to NLCIL's official statement, the initiative is designed to tackle fly ash disposal issues while simultaneously securing domestic access to critical materials essential for healthcare applications, clean energy infrastructure, high-technology manufacturing, advanced research activities, and national security operations.
Rare earth elements serve as fundamental components in the production of renewable energy systems, medical equipment, electronic devices, and defence technologies.
Current global supply chains for these materials remain highly concentrated in specific regions, making the domestic extraction project strategically important for reducing India's import dependency on these critical resources.
NLCIL Chairman and Managing Director Prasanna Kumar Motupalli emphasised that the collaboration aligns with principles of sustainable resource utilisation and circular economy practices while supporting India's broader objectives of achieving self-reliance in critical mineral resources.
The initiative represents a convergence of environmental responsibility and strategic resource security.
Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy characterised the project as a crucial advancement toward India's strategic mineral security goals while demonstrating the government's commitment to environmental stewardship.
The minister's endorsement underscores the project's alignment with national policy priorities regarding both resource independence and sustainable industrial practices.
