ONDC Inching Towards Critical Mass; Surpasses 200 Mn E-commerce Transactions

New Delhi, Mar 25 (KNN) The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 200 million transactions and solidifying its position as a transformative force in India's digital commerce ecosystem.

The network's rapid scaling trajectory highlights an accelerating adoption of digital commerce platforms across multiple sectors.
While the first 100 million transactions took approximately 20 months—from January 2023 to August 2024—the subsequent 100 million were added in just six months, underscoring the platform's exponential growth.

The acceleration reflects ONDCs expanding influence across critical sectors including food and beverages, grocery, retail, logistics, mobility, and financial services.

T. Koshy, Managing Director and CEO of ONDC, characterised the milestone as more than a numerical achievement. "Crossing 200 million transactions signifies a paradigm shift in digital commerce," Koshy stated.

He emphasised the network's core mission of creating an inclusive digital marketplace that provides equal opportunities for businesses of all scales, challenging existing market monopolies.

The government's strategic support has been instrumental in ONDCs growth.

In January, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises launched the MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing (TEAM) initiative, allocating Rs 277.35 crore over three years.

This program aims to onboard 500,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises, with a specific focus on empowering women-led businesses through digital commerce.

An initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), ONDC has fundamentally reimagined digital commerce interactions between businesses and consumers since its September 2022 launch.

The platform's rapid expansion signals India's increasing digital readiness and appetite for innovative, accessible economic platforms.

"This is just the beginning," Koshy added, hinting at future developments and emerging use cases within the ONDC ecosystem.

The network's trajectory suggests a promising future for democratised, technology-enabled commerce in India.
