Over 18,000 toys seized from retail stores across India without BIS mark

New Delhi, Jan 13 (KNN) In a Nation-wide enforcement drive conducted by Bureau of Indian Standards against outlets selling toys without valid BIS license, around 18,600 toys were seized in last one month.

Addressing the media, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said, "We received complaints from domestic manufacturers of sale of toys that do not conform with the BIS standard. We conducted 44 raids in last one month and seized 18,600 toys from major retail stores."

The consumer protection regulator CCPA has issued notices to three major e-commerce giants, Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal for selling toys for alleged violation of toys quality control order.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national standard body that is responsible for standardization, marking and quality certification of goods.

The raids were conducted at retail stores, including those of Hamleys, Archies, WH Smith, Kids Zone and Cococart located at major airports and malls across the country, he said.

As per reports, the government will take a legal actions against the retailers as per the BIS Act provisions.

Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) chief Nidhi Khare said, "We have also issued notices to Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal for selling toys without BIS quality mark."

We remain committed to ensuring the highest quality of products sold on the platform. We have received notification from CCPA and will respond appropriately," Flipkart said in a statement.

The Toys (Quality Control) Order which was issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2020, has been in effect since January 2021.  (KNN Bureau)
