Seven Applications Received Under Rs 37,500-Crore Coal Gasification Scheme

New Delhi, Sep 8 (KNN) The first round of the Rs 37,500-crore Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects has received seven applications from industries and public sector undertakings.

The applicants include Adani Enterprises Limited, which submitted three applications for urea projects, Gallantt Ispat Limited for Direct Reduced Iron and syngas, NTPC Limited for synthetic natural gas, Shyam Sel & Power Limited for syngas and Talcher Fertilisers Limited for urea.

The scheme was approved by the Union Cabinet on May 13, 2026, with a total financial outlay of Rs 37,500 crore. It aims to promote the conversion of domestic coal and lignite into products including syngas, methanol, ammonia, urea and hydrogen.

The scheme also targets the development of 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030, including 75 million tonnes under the scheme, and aims to reduce dependence on imports of LNG, urea, ammonia and methanol.

The applications received under Round 1 will now undergo detailed evaluation in accordance with the scheme guidelines and the Request for Proposal.

Round 2 of the scheme will open on September 8, 2026. The application windows will subsequently open at two-month intervals.
