Parliamentarian’s clarion call for early passage of Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill, 2017

New Delhi, Sept 28 (KNN) Emphasising on road safety standards in the country, Members of Parliament recently called for the early enactment of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill, 2017.

The remarks by the parliamentarians were made during a Media Interface on Road Safety, Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill, 2017 organized by CUTS.

Addressing the event, Harish Chand Meena, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and Member of PSC on Transport, Tourism and Culture assured that the bill shall be passed at the earliest by the Rajya Sabha.

He further said that merely passing the bill will not solve the purpose; instead there should be awareness about the laws as well.

Also D. Raja, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) who was present during raised the concerns of states, transport unions and other stake holders in respect of MVAB, 2017 and said that the bill has to inclusive in nature.

Speaking at the event, Director of CUTS International George Cheriyan said informed that India has only 2 per cent population of the world but it accounts for 10 per cent of the road accidents.

Citing statistics, he said that In 2016 out of the 4,80,652 accidents caused 1,50,785 persons were killed and 4,94,624 were injured. He said the vehicle population is increasing 6 percentage per year but the road connectivity is increasing only 1/2 per cent per year.
