New Delhi, Aug 26 (KNN)  The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is keen to partner with multinational food and beverage corporation, PepsiCo to develop healthy and nutritious products which can also be supplied as a part of mid-day meals in rural India.

PepsiCo Chairman Indra Nooyi today met Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal here and held discussions on a wide range of topics concerning the food processing sector.

Highlighting the potential for providing healthy meals to children in their tiffin boxes, the Food Processing Industries Minister pointed out that large segments of kids in the rural areas are suffering from iron deficiency.

She suggested that PepsiCo “partner with India for further research and development in developing such processed food products that can be supplied as part of the mid-day meals in rural India,” an official release said.

Badal also requested the company to further bring down the sugar content of soft drinks so that health aspects of such products are duly taken care of.

Stress was laid on bringing out new products in the market that are tasty as well as healthy and nutritious.  The Minister cited the example of oat-based products that can be developed as part of the food processing sector to provide a choice of healthy and nutritious food products to consumers at reasonable prices.

Assuring the Minister of PepsiCo’s efforts to provide products that are healthy and nutritious, Nooyi said that her company has already invested substantially in India’s food processing sector and they wish to double this investment in the coming years. (KNN/ES)
