New Delhi, Jun 10 (KNN)  The issue of severe power crisis in Tamil Nadu figured at the meeting between Chief Minister J Jayalalitha and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia today even as  the Centre has allocated more power to the State from its generating stations.

“It was noted that the power sector performance would be critical as the state (TN) is currently suffering from a large deficit,” the Planning Commission said after the Jayalalitha-Montek meeting.

The two met to finalise the annual plan for the State which has been fixed at Rs 37,128 crore for the year 2013-14, which includes the central assistance to the State Plan of about Rs 3,165 crore.

“In addition, an amount of Rs. 9,000 crore is likely to flow from the Centre to Tamil Nadu through various Centrally Sponsored Schemes. Thus, taking all resources, Plan assistance from the Central Government to the State of Tamil Nadu is expected to be over Rs 12,000 crore during 2013-14,” said an official notification.

The Planning Commission complimented TN for its sound fiscal position owing to the significant increase in mobilisation of resources, especially State’s own tax revenue for the State Plan.

The State’s Tax-GSDP ratio is likely to cross 10 per cent during 2013-14 making it one of the leading States in the country in terms of tax mobilisation. The outstanding liabilities as a percentage of GSDP are well within the fiscal consolidation requirements as per the 13th Finance Commission.

Further, the State continues to maintain favourable social indicators, especially health indicators such as birth rate, Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), Total Fertility Rate (TFR), Neo-natal Mortality Rate (NMR).

The State also ranks better than the national average in most of education indicators. However, there was need to focus on issues of quality of education and reducing the gender gap.

The additional power allocation comes in the wake of requests received from various States including Tamil Nadu for allocation of additional power of Central Generating Stations to meet shortage of power.

Hence the Government has taken steps to ease the corridor congestion which is hindering the supply of power from the surplus States to the State of Tamil Nadu.
The inter-regional links between NEW grid and SR grid and intra-regional links within SR for mitigating corridor congestion have been planned, which are in various stages of execution.  (KNN)
