Plastic exporters oppose mandatory BIS norms on polymers
New Delhi, Sept 12 (KNN) The Plastic industry has requested the government to not carry out compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms on polymers as it will impact the export segment.
Raising the matter, the Plastic Export Promotion Council (Plexconcil) said that the Department of Chemicals wants to impose mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms on polymers which will have major consequences on exports.
During April-June 2022 there was shrinkage of 4.2 per cent to USD 3.27 billion in India's plastics exports.
The raw materials used in the plastic industry are Polymers like PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), Polypropylene, ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene), HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) etc.
Highlighting the issue, Plexconcil’s Chairman Arvind Goenka said, “As polymers are already in shortage in the country because of low production, this norm would further hurt the plastic processing industry.”
He warned that the domestic processing industry will become uncompetitive.
Goenka has recommended that rather the government should make BIS norms mandatory on finished plastic goods to ensure that consumers get quality products. (KNN Bureau)
