New Delhi, Mar 19 (KNN) Amidst stiff competition from the powerloom and mill sector, Pochampalli and Kosa Silk products have been registered under the Geographical Indications (GI) of the Goods (Registration and Protection Act, 1999) recently, to ensure legal protection and to prevent unauthorized use of these products.

Further, for the development of the handloom sector which includes Kosa and Pochampalli Silk industries, the Pochampalli Handloom Park has been established with an outlay of Rs 34 crore, in line with the scheme for the setting up of an Integrated Textile Park, said the Minister of State in the Ministry of Textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi, in the Lok Sabha recently.

Dumping of cheap Chinese silk fabric has been a concern of the sector.  To prevent this, the reference price (benchmark) for antidumping duty on imported Chinese silk fabric had been increased with effect from Dec 5, 2011.

The government has been aware of the constraints of the sector, such as low productivity, inadequate input supply, poor marketing facilities and insufficient credit flow from institutional sources.

To address their concerns, the government during the 11th Five Year Plan and current financial year 2012-13, has been implementing six plan schemes- Integrated Handloom Development Scheme; Handloom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare scheme; Marketing and Export Promotion Scheme; Mill Gate Price Scheme and Diversified Handloom Development Scheme as well as the Revival, Reform and Restructuring Package.
