New Delhi, Jul 29 (KNN) The capacity of 12 major ports of India will be doubled in the next five years for which action plans have already been drawn, according to the Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Gadkari yesterday said India's 12 major ports will double their cargo handling capacity to 1,600 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from the current 800 million metric tonnes in the next five years.

"India plans to double the ports' capacity from the current 800 MT to 1,600 over the next five years," Gadkari said in an official release. He was speaking at a review meeting on the port sector attended by chiefs of all the 12 state-run major ports.

"Ports and roads play a key role and country's GDP can be boosted by two per cent if these key infrastructure sectors are developed to their potential.

“Required policy measures to create level playing fields for the major ports, including review of TAMP (Tariff Authority for Major Ports), would be taken to remove bottlenecks and facilitate growth," Gadkari said.

He also said that the Government will give a greater push to water transport. (KNN/SD)
