Updated: Jul 17, 2014 12:59:33pm
There will be installation of GPS in 990 delivery vans, the department said in a press notification.
India has the largest Postal Network in the world with over 1, 55,015 post offices (as on 31.03.2009) of which 1, 39,144 (89.76 per cent) are in the rural areas. At the time of independence, there were 23,344 post offices, which were primarily in urban areas. Thus, the network has registered a seven-fold growth since Independence, with the focus of this expansion primarily in rural areas.
On an average, a post office serves an area of 21.21 Sq. Km and a population of 7175 people.
The GPS devices will enable the Department to not only optimize the routes of the mail motor service schedules but to also monitor the movement of mail vans for their optimum utilization and reduce the response time in case of break-downs.
GPS devices have already been installed in mail vans in various states. As the Department gradually shifts to road transport for short haul, the devices shall facilitate effective fleet management and send pre-alerts to the mail offices about the anticipated time of arrival of mail vans so that their man-power and sorting planning can be synchronized with mail transmission.
The core activity of the Department is processing, transmission and delivery of mails. Mails are collected from more than 5 lakh letter boxes, processed by network of mail offices and conveyed by rail, road and airlines all over the country to reach the customers. (KNN/ES)
