Potential of e-commerce connecting local artisans to global market immense: Director, Handicrafts & Handloom J&K

Srinagar, Sept 6 (KNN) The Jammu & Kashmir Trade Promotion Organisation (JKTPO) and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) organised a workshop on e-commerce in Pampore on Monday.

Addressing the workshop, Director Handlooms and Handicrafts, Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah, said that e-commerce has huge potential in the field of handlooms and handicrafts as it connects local artisans to the markets of the world.

The workshop that was held at the Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) was attended by women entrepreneurs, small entrepreneurs, E-Commerce companies, logistic companies, retailers, artisans, FPOs, and industry associations of UT.

During the workshop, the working of the ONDC network was explained. The participants were given an opportunity to interact with the ONDC team and their partners.

Speaking at the occasion, MD JKTPO, Khalid Jahangir, said e-commerce is the new future of the business ecosystem and there is a need for the business community to adopt this as soon as possible, adding that the volume of trade through digital platforms has witnessed an upward trend and is likely to change the face of trading pattern.

The workshop was led by Shireesh Joshi, Chief Business Officer ONDC. He said "ONDC aims to increase the number of sellers on e-commerce platform to 20 Lakhs and consumers to 20 crores in next 5 years." 

He further mentioned that Jammu and Kashmir is one of the first Union Territory which has taken the initiative of on-boarding its entrepreneurs on the ONDC platform.

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative aimed at promoting open networks for all aspects of the exchange of goods and services over digital or electronic networks. ONDC is based on open-sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform.  (KNN Bureau)
