New Delhi, May 29 (KNN) Coal India has raised the price of some grades of coal, a move which is expected to increase electricity tariff for thermal power stations.

The price revision by Coal India Ltd (CIL) will increase electricity tariff by 5-10 paise per unit.

CIL has rationalised prices of thermal coal used in power generation.

Prices of all inferior grades were raised by 10 per cent, on an average

However, prices of premium grade coal were reduced by 12 per cent.

According to the media reports, the generation cost of NTPC, one of the most cost-efficient power producers of the country, may move up by 5-6 paise per unit.

Coal India Chairman S Narsing Rao said that it has not hiked prices for 29 months and given the inflationary pressures, this had to be done. "After this 12 per cent reduction, the prices of high grade coal would come down to about Rs 4,500 a tonne, slightly below the international benchmarks," he was quoted as saying in a media report.

Overall the price realisation is expected to grow by about 4.7 per cent.

CIL has increased prices five times since they were deregulated in 2000. The last price hike of January 2012 made domestic coal dearer by an average 12.5 per cent over the price of Rs 1,600 per tonne prevailing then. (KNN)
